Elmira Jackals Donate Life Night
On Saturday, February 22, 2014, the Elmira Jackals took on the Wheeling Nailers for the second night of their three-in-three weekend at First Arena. Jackals players wore specialty jerseys for Donate Life Donor Awareness Night. Jerseys were auctioned off live post-game with proceeds going to Donate Life. Donate Life pucks were also given away to all fans in attendance.

At the Elmira Jackals donor awareness program, the Campbell donor family (Andy, Holly, Alex, and Ben) participated in the first ceremonial puck drop of the evening. Alex and Ben bravely stepped onto the ice to honor their brother, Jacob, an organ and cornea donor in 2007. A second ceremonial puck drop helped spread awareness for those on the national waiting list. Pictured here with the Campbell family is William Ellis, a kidney dialysis patient, currently awaiting a kidney transplant.

Liver recipient Richard Perez was a huge help volunteering at the game (and so many other places). Here is Richard and the Elmira Jackal’s mascot as they promote donation!

We held our first T-shirt design contest for Donate Life Night with the Jackals. Local middle and high schools were invited to participate. Pictured here is the contest winner, Piper Dean, a 7th grader in Addison Central School, and her winning T-shirt design. Congratulations Piper!
Donate Life Advocacy Day
Donate Life Advocacy Day was held in Albany on February 26. Representatives from the New York Alliance for Donation met with legislators throughout the day.

World Kidney Day
FLDRN marked World Kidney Day on March 13 by inviting residents in our region to dress in orange. World Kidney Day aims to raise awareness of the importance of kidneys to our overall health and to reduce the frequency and impact of kidney disease and its associated health problems worldwide. Take our Kidney True or False Quiz

To show our support for World Kidney Day, some of the Finger Lakes Donor Recovery Network staff and friends dressed in orange. It was our way of raising awareness about the need for more organ donors.

Legislative Education Day
On May 6, FLDRN joined other organizations and headed to Albany for the annual Legislative Education Day. Time was spent with legislators emphasizing the importance of organ donation for their constituents.
Prior to the May visit, on April 8, the New York Alliance for Donation (NYAD) thanked Governor Cuomo and members of the New York State Senate and Assembly for taking decisive steps to improve the performance of the New York State Donate Life Registry. The 2014-15 State Budget allows for the transfer of administration of the state donor registry to a not-for-profit organization with experience facilitating organ, eye and tissue donation.

Volunteers from across New York State participated in a training session before setting out to meet with legislators.

Representatives from FLDRN, Rochester Eye and Tissue Bank and The Harbor House joined other volunteers to meet with our legislators in Albany. From left: Nancy Ryan, Karen Guarino and Amy James. Seated in front is Joan Malley.
Cayuga DMV’s Organ Donor Drive
FLDRN Community Education Manager Amy James visited the Cayuga County DMV on May 12 during their month-long donor registration drive. A total of 251 people registered during the month of May. Congratulations Cayuga County DMV for coordinating such a successful, creative and unusual donor drive!

Each person who joined the New York State Donate Life Registry in May at the DMV was given the opportunity to put their name on a leaf to add to the tree.
