Organ Donors Give Hope & New Life to Others
Last year, one-third of the region’s organ donors who passed life on had documented their wish to donate, many of them having signed up through the New York State Donate Life Registry. Joining the donor registry and sharing your decisions about organ donation with your family helps to assure your wishes will be carried out.
In 2017, thanks to the generosity of 48 donors from the area, as well as donors from outside our region, Finger Lakes Donor Recovery Network helped to coordinate 227 life-saving organ transplants, helping to save the lives of 207 people.
The selfless decisions of organ donors and their families means that hundreds of other families now have more time with a loved one who had desperately been waiting for a transplant to save their life.
In addition, the region served by Finger Lakes Donor Recovery Network continues its climb in organ donor registration rates – nearing the 40% mark. Tompkins County is leading the way with over 50% of its residents enrolled in the New York State Donate Life Registry.
